Did you know that tourists are monitored at every turn in Venice?

Every movement is monitored - and it has nothing to do with the corona pandemic.

As soon as you enter Venice *, all your movements are monitored - whether you take a break, accelerate the pace or take it a little slower.

The aim of this monitoring is to be able to change tourism for the better, they say.

Venice wants to get masses of visitors under control - through surveillance

Before the corona pandemic, Venice was

flooded

by around 30 million tourists every year

- and that with a total of only 50,000 inhabitants.

Huge crowds moved in the main streets and the water buses were completely overloaded.

Locals have difficulty getting around and commuting to work becomes a gauntlet.

That is why the

ticket prices for tourists continue to rise

.

Now the authorities want to have found a tried and tested means to better monitor tourism in Venice.

A new digital control center has existed for this purpose at the police headquarters on the island of Tronchetto west of Venice since September 2020.

While on the one hand the images of the city surveillance cameras can be observed as usual, on the other hand

in the so-called “Smart Control Room” a lot of other data is displayed in real time on huge screens

, as the broadcaster CNN reports.

The information collected should not only be used to record the number of visitors, but also to discuss ways of avoiding crowds - for example by

requiring entry on busy days

.

In this way, the flow of visitors should be better managed and distributed across the city.

Venice vacation not without monitoring: where does the data come from?

“We find out in real time how many people are in which part of the city and which countries they come from,” explains Marco Bettini.

His company Venis has developed the system that makes it possible to monitor this data.

According to the CNN report, the authorities receive their data through

a cooperation with Telecom Italia

, Italy's largest internet and mobile operator.

The phone data is automatically aggregated so that no personal data is passed on, it is said.
