US President Donald Trump decided tonight (Wednesday) to pardon Aviam Sela, a senior pilot in the Air Force who served as the operative of Israeli-American spy Jonathan Pollard.
An indictment was filed against Sela in 1986 for espionage offenses.
The White House's announcement of the pardon claimed that the request was supported by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ambassadors Ron Drummer and David Friedman, as well as Miriam Adelson - the wife of the businessman and associate of Trump Sheldon Adelson.
"The State of Israel has issued a full and unequivocal apology, and requested the pardon in order to close this unfortunate chapter in relations between the two countries," the White House said in a statement.
