Emmanuel Macron had entrusted the historian Benjamin Stora with a mission on
"the memory of colonization and the Algerian war"
, with the charge for this specialist to submit to the president a report comprising practical recommendations in order to promote
"reconciliation between the French and Algerian peoples ”
.
This report was expected.
On the one hand because the subject is highly flammable, so much does it unleash passions, while Algeria has been independent for almost 60 years, on the other hand because of the personality of Benjamin Stora, who, for having dedicated his career to the history of Algeria and Maghrebian immigration, cannot be considered as an insignificant observer, as his past commitments - to the extreme left in his youth, to the left in his years of maturity - cannot be totally separated from his scientific work, which bears the mark of a principled anti-colonialism and an undisguised empathy for Algerian nationalism.
