At about 4 o'clock this afternoon, the reporter observed the Shing Mun River on-site and found that the water from the Man Lai Pavilion in Tai Wai to the Hong Kong Heritage Museum was milk-green to light green and was about 800 meters long.

A friend of the Dragon who went to the site every day to photograph the birds said that the river water only changed color in the past two days. It was more directly caused by pollution. It was discharged from a drain. "The fish are dead, and the birds have no food!"

The drain that Longyou alleged was located off Wenli Pavilion. It continuously drained milky-white sewage, causing the river water to form a milky green shape and foaming. When passing by, the residents said, "Wow! !"

Sha Tin District Councillor Ng Ting-lam said that the Shing Mun River began to change color since yesterday, and the situation has become more serious. It extends from Tai Wai to Fo Tan. There are several dead fish along the river. It is temporarily unknown whether it was caused by eating unclean food or toxins.

She said that the Drainage Services Department and the Environmental Protection Department were present at the scene this morning to conduct tests. The Drainage Services Department even used CCTV to illuminate the canal to find the source. The Environmental Protection Department conducted a "test of water", and samples of river water were taken for laboratory testing.

Wu Dinglin said that the discoloration of the Shing Mun River may be a biological phenomenon, because the river bottom organisms, such as algae blooming in large numbers, make the river water appear discolored; it may also be caused by a water test on a site or building at a distance and the Shing Mun River was discharged. Temporary discoloration, but the substance will decompose in water.

Wu Dinglin pointed out that the Chengmen River had changed color many times in the past, which also coincides with the above statement. However, there are currently sites adjacent to the Chengmen River, so the cause of this discoloration cannot be determined.

Drainage Services Department: Public drainage facilities are operating normally

A spokesman for the Drainage Services Department said that officers have been sent to the Shing Mun River today and found that the water in a section of the river near Tai Wai is relatively green.

The department also inspected the public drainage facilities near the Shing Mun River and they are all operating normally. On the 11th of last month, there were suspected oil pollution and over a hundred dead fish on the Shing Mun River. The Environmental Protection Department stated that the initial indications that the pH of the river water was normal and no illegality was found along the river. For discharges or suspected pollution sources, river water samples have been taken for detailed testing.

On October 13 last year, a section of Shing Mun River off Man Lai Court, Tai Wai, turned blue-green, about 1 km long, with no peculiar smell or dead fish; on October 5, 2018, Shing Mun River from MTR Fo Tan Station to Kwai Tei Street appeared Fluorescent green. The Environmental Protection Department said it was related to the use of camp light toner to test roof leaks in an industrial building and did not contain toxic substances.

"Hong Kong 01" is consulting the Environmental Protection Department about the incident.
