This Capitol policeman spared senators the worst during the attack by Trump supporters on the temple of American democracy

Eugene Goodman is America's new hero.

This aptly named man (Goodman: Good man in English) stood out for his courage and composure in drawing rioters away from the Senate chamber during the January 6 uprising on Washington Capitol Hill.

A gesture that earned him the honor on Wednesday at the inauguration ceremony of Joen Biden.

He was the one who escorted new Vice President Kamala Harris as part of her new role as "Deputy Senate Sergeant-at-Arms," a promotion obtained this week.

I love to see Officer #EugeneGoodman escorting Vice President Harris, her husband Doug, and the Pences down the Capitol steps he so valiantly defended just two weeks ago.

Goodman became the face of resistance to the 'insurgency' when, shortly after the attack on Capitol Hill began, a video showed him leading a crowd of hardline Trump supporters in the opposite direction of the Senate chamber. .

At this point, lawmakers were debating an objection to the Arizona Electoral College vote count.

His gesture may have avoided the worst.

Here's the scary moment when protesters initially got into the building from the first floor and made their way outside Senate chamber.

In footage captured that day by Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic, Eugene Goodman is seen being chased by angry rioters down a staircase in the building.

When he has reached a landing, he looks to his left, where he notices that the Senate door was still unguarded.

Cleverly, he then leads the rioters to the right, away from the legislators and towards reinforcing officers.

A congressional gold medal for potentially saving lives

The Senate chambers were not secured until minutes later, according to the timeline of riot events.

These few moments gained will allow the senators to be evacuated.

We now know that supporters of Donald Trump came looking for them with violent intentions.

Later, the rioters will eventually enter ... an empty Senate.

Once Goodman managed to lead the rioters to a larger hall, Capitol Hill police, though outnumbered, were able to regain control of the situation and channel the protesters.

A trio of lawmakers introduced legislation last week to award Goodman a Congressional Gold Medal for potentially saving lives on one of the darkest days in U.S. history.

This medal is reserved for Americans who have distinguished themselves by “their achievements and contributions” to their country.

This father, a former soldier deployed in Iraq, is now nicknamed "the man who saved the Senate".

And he will continue to do so.
