The British Embassy in Beijing on January 20 refuted Beijing's accusations against the British National (Overseas) Passport (BNO) policy, and for the second time issued a statement against what they believed China was "misleading".
In 2020, the British government announced more details about the BNO expansion plan, namely the special visa "Hong Kong BN(O) Visa" (Hong Kong BN(O) Visa) application details.
It will accept applications from January 31, 2021. There is no quota limit. Once approved, you can live, work and study in the UK. You can apply for settlement after 5 years of residence, and you can apply for British citizenship after 1 year of residence.
The British Embassy in Beijing issued a document on Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons Zhao Lijian and Wang Wenbin criticizing the BNO policy as violating the Sino-British Joint Declaration, stating that the British immigration policy is transparent and consistent.

The article mentioned that the new route does not automatically provide Hong Kong people with the right of abode and British nationality. BNO holders will follow the procedures that have always been applied to apply for permanent residence.
In addition, the article also pointed out that mainland Chinese citizens or citizens of other countries who have been living in the UK for 5 years can also apply for permanent residency status.
China claims that the "Sino-British Joint Declaration" does not give Britain any right or qualification to interfere in Hong Kong affairs after 1997.
The British Embassy in China responded in a statement that the British side undoubtedly accepted China’s sovereignty over Hong Kong and did not support or encourage Hong Kong’s independence. However, in 1984, China had a high degree of autonomy, lifestyle, social and economic system in Hong Kong for 50 years. No change, a legally binding commitment to the UK.
The United Kingdom has the right to require China to fulfill its commitments under the "Sino-British Joint Declaration."
