The state parliaments influence legislation.
The
state parliaments
represent the
individual federal states.
The state
parliaments
are a sign of
German federalism.
The
legislature
is a few exceptions
five years.
- The northernmost state parliament in Germany is in Kiel and is the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein -
The
state parliaments
are elected by the citizens of the
federal states
and represent their interests.
Through them, the
regional legislative competence is lived
on.
However, this may not
interfere with
federal legislation
.
Conversely, however, this legislation can give concrete form to federal laws.
As part of the
corona pandemic,
there is an individual
corona ordinance
in each federal state
.
This division allows, among other things, more detailed information on the
situation
in the individual federal states.
But it is not only in this area that the state parliaments should ensure that
the interests of the federal states
be granted.
State parliaments - How many state parliaments are there?
State parliaments are by definition
the
parliaments of the federal states of
the Federal Republic of Germany.
The
state parliaments of
the
federal states
are called
Landtag
in the territorial
states
.
How many state parliaments
there are is not the
same
as the number of
state parliaments
.
The reason for this are the exceptions in the city-states, where the state parliaments have a different name.
These exceptions are:
Berlin
(
Berlin
House of Representatives)
Bremen
(Bremen citizenship)
Hamburg
(Hamburg Citizenship)
Even in the
federal states
where the state
parliament can be found
in the name of the
representative assembly
, the names are not always uniform.
The names differ in some federal states.
The
state parliament
in Baden-Württemberg is called the "Landtag of Baden-Württemberg" and in Bavaria it is also called the "Bavarian State Parliament".
Regardless of the name, the tasks and elections are identical and in total there is a corresponding representation for each federal state.
State parliaments - this is how they are elected
The
state parliaments
are essentially elected in a
proportional
representation system.
The
electoral laws of
the individual countries
specify the exact regulations
.
In Bremen
the electoral term is four years
.
In all other federal states, however, it is
five years
.
Another special feature in Bremen is that the country is divided into the city of Bremen and Bremerhaven.
In Bavaria, each administrative district forms its own constituency, which in turn is divided into electoral districts.
Because the elections do not take place at the same time, it is often criticized that the
parties
are permanently in an
election campaign
.
The number
of mandates
depends on the
size of the federal states
, which is
measured
on the basis of the
population
.
This weighting ensures that a citizen in a small federal state does not have a more powerful voice than one in a large one.
The next state elections to be held are those in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
These are each scheduled for March 2021.
How these will take place is still uncertain in view of the pandemic.
State parliaments - the tasks
The
parliaments of the states
have the
task of
controlling
the
state government
,
enacting state
laws and shaping and approving the state budget.
The
state parliaments have a
major influence on everyday political life in the respective federal states and at the same time perform an important
control
function.
Because the
state parliaments are elected
directly in the
federal states
, they also ensure that the interests of the individual federal states can be better
addressed
and that the
state laws
can be adapted to the specifics of the respective states.
This is particularly evident in times of the
corona pandemic
.
In a federal state with a high number of infections, the reaction can be different than in one with a low number of infections.
