According to the city building authority, an urban tree on Sonnwendstrasse in the south of Weilheim was “genuinely mutilated”.
And, as research showed, by residents.
The building committee of the city council was stunned yesterday - and reacted with severity.

tree keepers of the Stadtwerke had noticed last October that strangers had "improperly cut back" a field maple in the public "roadside green" on Sonnwendstrasse.
So much so that this “could not be maintained without major and lengthy maintenance effort”.
Among other things, the main shoot was cut off and the tree was "downright mutilated", said Manfred Stork, head of the municipal building administration, in the building committee meeting on Tuesday the incident.
That means: "This tree will never grow properly again, it is broken."
City demands compensation
And the city doesn't want to put up with that.
“We have to be tough,” said Mayor Markus Loth (BfW), “and definitely make a claim for damages”.
In other words: The cut tree, according to the unanimous decision, will be replaced by a new plant.
And the costs of an estimated 600 to 700 euros have to be borne by the polluter.

The latter is now also known to the town hall.
According to Stork, “research by the building administration” revealed that a neighbor “carried out this property damage on his own”.
He admitted that after making contact.
“It was by no means intended to mutilate the tree,” Stork quoted the perpetrator's explanation: “Rather, it should be prevented that the tree grows too much” - on the one hand, out of concern “that the tree will be the facade of the house in a few years could damage ”, on the other hand, because it would“ have grown too far into the street space ”and thus possibly impaired the school bus.

"Since the neighbors were of the opinion that the cut could be carried out in a few minutes without great effort, they did not want to use the municipal utilities for this," said Stork, explaining the motives of the residents to take action themselves.
For “this incorrect assessment”, the perpetrators have since apologized to the city - and suggested “preserve the tree and have it looked after at their own expense”.
According to Stork, the arborists of the Stadtwerke pleaded for removal and replacement planting at the expense of the polluter.
And so the city council's building committee decided.
3. Mayor Alfred Honisch (Greens) asked whether the city should also file a criminal complaint - as a “signal”.
But since the perpetrator is "repentant", in this case it is sufficient to threaten this, said the head of the building administration, Stork.
It must be clear, however: "The city will not put up with something like this in the future either."
A second case in the urban area
In the meantime, a second such case has been noticed in Weilheim, the meeting said.
Where, however, was not said.
Stork only explained to the "Tagblatt" request that the same procedure would be followed in that case.
