The White House is preparing for a change of president.

On January 20, the so-called "Inauguration Day" takes place, during which Joe Biden is sworn in as the new US President.

As planned, there is a flying change in the White House on the same day.

According to the protocol, the Trumps have breakfast here in the morning, and in the afternoon the Bidens move into their new home with more than 500 political employees.

The move is an act of strength, because the White House is huge: It has 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms and eight stairwells.

While Joe Biden swears his oath of office on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, DC, the domestic staff in the White House has already had a long day at work.

Because they are the only people who will stay with the White House after the change of president, they will take care of the move.

From early morning onwards, they carry furniture and moving boxes belonging to the presidential families in and out.

Then the time to say goodbye strikes: If everything goes as planned, Donald Trump will leave the White House around 10:30 a.m.

Before that - if everything goes as usual, but you never know that with Trump - he will say goodbye to the house staff.

Traditionally, the outgoing US President is presented with two US flags in a wooden box: One was flying over the White House when he was sworn in;

the other on the morning he left the White House.

At 12 o'clock sharp, Joe Biden becomes the new commander in chief of the US troops.

Because then the legendary suitcase with the atomic codes will be handed over.

However, not from president to president, but from a military man to hand it over to the next.

This suitcase, the so-called "nuclear football", will always be near Joe Biden from now on.

Meanwhile, the big cleaning campaign begins in the White House, which is particularly thorough this year due to the corona pandemic: Every corner of the East and West Wing should be thoroughly disinfected.

Then it will be rebuilt: All paintings, desks and sofas will be replaced - if the new US President Joe Biden so wishes.

Carpets and curtains are cleaned, painters fix flaws on the walls, the florists put up fresh flowers.

Time is short, because the new presidential family is to be welcomed between 3:30 and 5 p.m.

Then it says: Trellis stand for the new presidential couple Joe and Jill Biden.

There is usually only time for larger furnishing projects and the design of the residence after the move.

The presidents used the money approved by Congress for this in various ways: Richard Nixon had a bowling alley built, Barack Obama an entire basketball court in the garden.

And the outgoing First Lady Melania Trump also left her mark on the facility: Most recently, she had the Rose Garden redesigned.

As of now, Joe Biden has not yet revealed what personal touch he will be giving the White House.
