There he is now.
All eyes are on him.
Joe Biden is there.
He took his oath of office as the 46th President of the United States at exactly 11.49 am local time;
his hand was on the 128-year-old Biden family Bible.
Lady Gaga sang the national anthem, and now the new president must deliver the most important speech of his life on the steps of the Capitol.
“We have to come together as a nation, we need unity.
There is no peace without unity, ”Biden shouts from the Capitol balcony.
“Together we can achieve great things.” And: “That means we don't treat each other like opponents, but like neighbors.
We have to stop yelling at each other. "
It is a remarkable moment in the country's history: since 1789, the American President has been sworn in every four years in this solemn ceremony.
But never before has this ritual taken place under such dramatic circumstances.
Just 14 days ago, the mob raged in the same place where Biden is now evoking the unity of the nation.
Joe Biden and his new Vice President Kamala Harris are taking over from Donald Trump a deeply divided, confused country where 400,000 people have already died from a deadly virus.
Soldiers are guarding their inauguration because there are great fears that radical Trump supporters could attack the Capitol again.
