Belgium's Foreign Minister Sophie Wilms said Europe should continue charting its course and not wait for the United States to say which way to follow.

"Europe learned from the administration of former President Donald Trump to what extent it has an interest in its independence from Washington and following its own path, not against a specific party, but rather to be in the position of a reliable partner," she said in an interview with Agence France-Presse.

Wilms said that the European Union can "feel comfortable" about the approach of the new US president, Joe Biden, to relations between the two sides of the Atlantic, noting that "there is anticipation and hope in the ability to work with a figure whose movements can be more predictable, perhaps, but without naivety."

"We know that the United States will maintain its agenda, but what will change is the approach to multilateralism and to the European Union, according to what we have heard in some statements," Wilms, who previously held the position of prime minister, added.

The decisions taken by the administration of former US President Donald Trump put the Europeans in a confrontational position with Washington on some economic issues.
