The Madrid region announced Thursday to temporarily suspend the administration of Covid-19 vaccines to healthcare workers, citing a lack of doses for which it blames the Spanish government, which it regularly opposes over the management of the pandemic.

The region

"is already short of vaccines (...) Madrid does not have doses to vaccinate more front-line health workers

,

"

said Madrid's health adviser, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, within the regional assembly.

Enrique Ruiz Escudero, member of the Popular Party (conservative),

blamed

the situation on the

"mismanagement"

of the national government of socialist Pedro Sanchez, whom he accuses of injuring Madrid in the distribution of vaccines.

According to information from the Ministry of Health, Madrid received 176,000 doses, or 13%, of the 1.3 million distributed to the 17 autonomous communities of the country, for a population that represents 14% of Spain's total.

The distribution is made on

"fair criteria",

assured the secretary general of digital health of the national government, Alfredo González, adding that the region of Madrid

"has a stock of some 30,000 doses"

, insofar as it administered only 142,000 vaccines.

Within the regional government, the left-wing opposition attributed the suspension of vaccination to poor health management in the region, one of those that administered the fewest vaccines compared to the number of doses received.

From the start of the first wave, the region of the Spanish capital became the epicenter of the epidemic in the country, concentrating a fifth of the 2.4 million people infected and the 55,000 deaths recorded.

Clashes are constant on the subject between the conservative regional authority, which defends moderate restrictions that do not harm the economy, and the socialist central executive, which in October imposed a closure of the capital and several neighboring towns.
