After demands from the base to renounce the candidacy for chancellor: Green

2021-01-21T16:52:28.039Z

A small group of Greens, who belong to the left wing, has called on the federal leadership to campaign without a candidate for chancellor. There is talk of a "personality cult". The board is annoyed.

It has not yet been decided who will be the Greens' candidate for chancellor.

But that they want to set one up is undisputed.

Twelve grassroots members of the “Independent Green Left” group asked the top not to do so and instead to set up party leaders Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck as the top duo.

"Personality cult" is not good for the Greens, it contradicts their ideals.

There are no prominent party officials among the signatories, but committed grassroots members.

The "editorial network Germany" reported on it first.

The party's federal managing director, Michael Kellner, has now responded to the letter.

SPIEGEL has the answer.

He was irritated by the actions of the party friends.

"I am surprised that you sent us the letter in advance, but immediately announced that you would send it directly to the press without any possibility of feedback," wrote Kellner.

Although they praised “unity” and “team spirit” in the party, they would not seek the dialogue themselves, but “the public”.

"You are ignoring the promised unity," wrote Kellner, who is himself part of the left wing.

Waiter again rejects the primary election request

For the first time this year, the Greens would have the »chance of the Chancellery«.

In the event of a Green election victory, voters would have a “right” to “know who should move into the Chancellery”.

Therefore Baerbock and Habeck would make a proposal to the party "between Easter and Pentecost."

In their letter, the base members had also asked for a primary election to be made about the personnel.

Kellner rejected this request again.

At a party congress "the party will decide on the personnel and content list."

In the summer, Kellner had already said that no primary election was planned.

Other Green politicians also reacted angrily to the demand.

The member of the Bundestag Sven-Christian Kindler wrote on Twitter that the letter was a "storm in a water glass".

The timetable is expressly supported by all members of the Bundestag, "including those on the left."

The deputy federal chairman Jamila Schäfer tweeted that anyone who received "hardly more than 5% of party congress votes" had to "troll with open letters."

In surveys, the Greens are currently seventeen percentage points behind the Union, but still in second place ahead of the SPD.

The party leaders Habeck and Baerbock had both said in the past few weeks that they trusted themselves to be the Chancellor.

In the federal election in autumn 2021, the Greens aim to become the strongest force and lead a government.
