Who is patient 0 in the BRK castle in Garatshausen?

After the Red Cross suspected a former patient of the Schindlbeck Clinic in Herrsching, managing director Dr.

Robert Schindlbeck decided to withdraw this suspicion.

Herrsching / Garatshausen

- This assumption did not leave them alone: Could it really have been the case that a former patient at the Schindlbeck Clinic in Herrsching triggered a corona outbreak in the nursing home after being transferred to the BRK Castle Garatshausen, which occurred within four? Weeks cost 18 people their lives?

Those in charge of the BRK around district manager Jan Lang had expressed this assumption - and thus caused astonishment, irritation and work among staff and bosses in Herrsching.

“We looked through another 500 to 600 patient files,” explains clinic managing director Dr.

Robert Schindlbeck in conversation with the Starnberg Mercury.

“Between November 1st and December 31st, only one patient was transferred to Garatshausen.

And that was negative. ”Schindlbeck said this patient was brought to Herrsching from a psychosomatic facility on November 17th.

Immediately afterwards, he was checked for the virus using a PCR test, the safest test method to date.

Result: negative.

In the following two weeks the man was treated internistically.

On December 1, the patient had another PCR test before he was transferred to Garatshausen.

Result: negative again.

“It cannot have been positive with us,” Schindlbeck deduces from the results and says: “It will remain a mystery to us how the BRK comes up with its assumption.” He and his chief physicians tend to believe that the man is in Garatshausen infected.

Marcus Wicke cannot imagine that.

He is the BRK care division manager and in this role he is also involved in processing the process in Garatshausen.

“Of course we think about where the virus could have come from,” he says.

“And of course guesswork is just guesswork.

But we don't let any relatives into the house and at the time we didn't have any employees who tested positive. ”The only new addition was the patient from Herrsching.

He can remember that there was a negative test result when it was posted, says Wicke.

“But that's always just a snapshot.” For him and his colleagues at the BRK, the trace to Herrsching is therefore “the most obvious guess”.

Incidentally, Wicke does not want this to be understood as a criticism or accusation of the work of doctors and nurses in Herrsching.

“We don't want to point the finger at anyone,” he says.

At the time, the BRK had no reason to refuse to admit the man.

"If we had known that there was a corona outbreak at the Schindlbeck Clinic, we might not have taken in the gentleman at all, but at least in isolation," he says.

This corona outbreak, with a total of more than 50 infected employees and ten deaths, only became known on December 8th, one week after the man was transferred.

The clinic was then completely shut down and has only been accepting patients again since last week.

Four out of five stations are back in operation, 50 to 60 patients are being cared for, says Schindlbeck.

The seven beds in the intensive care unit are fully occupied.

There has been no new infection since Christmas.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, around 100 Covid patients have been treated in Herrsching - "with outstanding success," says Schindlbeck.

On Friday, for example, a man could be released who had previously been “terribly bad together” and had to be ventilated.

"These are success reports that our staff urgently need."
