The European Parliament passed a resolution on January 21, condemning China's suppression of Hong Kong opposition figures and calling on all countries to sanction officials including Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

The parliament stated that it will "carefully examine" the agreement when voting on the European-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment (European-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment), and that it will take into account the human rights situation in China when voting.

The text of the bill calls for "targeted sanctions" on Chinese and Hong Kong officials who are responsible for Hong Kong police actions.

The importance of the opinions of members of the European Parliament lies in the fact that the China-EU Investment Agreement, which has been negotiated for nearly seven years, reached an agreement in principle in December 2020, but it must be passed by the European Parliament.

According to the bill, the European Parliament calls on the Hong Kong government to immediately and unconditionally release all persons suspected of violating the "subversion of state power" in the Hong Kong version of the National Security Act, as well as the former Secretary-General of Hong Kong Zhifeng Huang Zhifeng, member Zhou Ting and Chairman Lin Langyan for internal political reasons. Democrats, opposition representatives and social activists arrested for motives also urged EU countries to sanction officials from China and Hong Kong, including Carrie Lam.

The European Parliament passed three resolutions on the same day, summarizing the human rights violations in Hong Kong, Turkey and Vietnam.

The Hong Kong-related resolution also mentioned that the political conclusion of the EU-China "China-EU Comprehensive Investment Agreement" did not reflect the request made by the parliament to use investment negotiations as a lever to maintain Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy.

Members of the European Parliament regret that the EU has not grasped this "tool". By reaching an investment agreement with China, the EU has lost its credibility on human rights issues.

On the same day, the spokesperson of the Chinese mission to the European Union responded to a reporter’s question on the passage of the European Parliament’s resolution concerning Hong Kong. He expressed strong condemnation and firm opposition. .
