(CNN) -

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced this Friday that the impeachment charge against former President Donald Trump will be handed over to the Senate next Monday.

"I spoke with the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Nancy) Pelosi, who informed me that the position will be delivered to the Senate on Monday," said Schumer.

Schumer also said there would be a "full" trial against former President Trump.

McConnell had proposed delaying the trial until mid-February to give Trump's legal team time to prepare, but Schumer's comments suggest that the trial will begin next week.

The Constitution says that the trial begins the afternoon after the Senate is handed over.

Schumer's announcement sets a new deadline for Senate leaders to reach an agreement, as the logistics of the impeachment trial is part of a broader negotiation on the Senate power-sharing agreement that remains stalled by a fight over obstructionism.

Schumer said Friday that McConnell's insistence on the Senate organizational resolution to include a provision protecting obstructionism was "unacceptable and will not be accepted."

The Democratic leader also rejected an argument by Senate Republicans that an impeachment for a former president was unconstitutional, noting that legal scholars have said there is a precedent for doing so.

"The Senate will hold a trial on the impeachment of Donald Trump," said Schumer.

It will be a full trial.

It will be a fair trial.

But make no mistake, there will be a trial, and when that trial is over, the senators will have to decide whether they believe that Donald J. Trump incited the insurrection against the United States. "

McConnell said Friday that the Senate should give Trump a "full and fair process" to mount his impeachment defense.

“This impeachment began with a minimal and unprecedented process in the House.

The aftermath cannot be an insufficient Senate process that denies former President Trump his due process or harms the Senate or the presidency itself, ”McConnell said.

"Senate Republicans strongly believe that we need a full and fair process in which the former president can mount a defense and the Senate can properly consider the factual, legal and constitutional issues at stake."
