Moscow-Sana
Chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council Konstantin Kosacheov announced today that extending the START 3 treaty before its expiration date is possible, provided that its current text is preserved.
The White House announced yesterday that US President Joe Biden intends to extend the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Limitation "START 3" with Russia for a period of 5 years.
Commenting on White House spokeswoman Jane Saki's statements in this regard, Kosacheov told Sputnik, "It is great news if this position is not accompanied by any additional conditions and the treaty is extended in its current text."
The Russian-American consultations on extending the treaty have stalled during the administration of former US President Donald Trump.
The date of entry into force of the treaty expires on February 5, and it sets a ceiling for the number of strategic nuclear warheads for Russia and the United States, which should not exceed 1550 warheads for each party.
