The measure would modify an existing program to tackle child poverty, and would benefit tens of millions of households with monthly payments of up to $ 300.

The plan that the Democrats are preparing would make the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) benefit tens of millions of low-income families in the United States with children through monthly payments.

Under the Democratic proposal, which is part of Biden's plans to tackle child poverty, the IRS would deposit

checks for $ 250 for each child between the ages of 6 and 17. years

.

These payments would equal a total of $ 3,600 a year for the youngest children and 3,000 a year for those ages 6 to 17.

It's unclear when lawmakers would make the bill public.

Biden's proposal is to increase this amount to a maximum of $ 3,600 annually, and send it to eligible families in monthly payments, rather than making people wait an entire year for a one-time payment.

Under his plan, families would receive benefits even if they owe the government in taxes more money than the value of this credit.

Legislators also want families to be able to decide whether to receive payments on a monthly or annual basis.

Officials who spoke to the

said Democratic lawmakers plan, under the guidance of the new Administration, to turn these children's benefits into a permanent government program for the future, though the current proposal only seeks to approve the program for one year, to then lobby for Congress to extend it.

It is not yet clear how much money families with minor children must earn to be eligible for the monthly payments.

Republican congressmen are expected to oppose this bill, arguing the high cost it would have for the government's pocket.

After the elections, the Democrats regained control of the Senate, but the number of senators is divided 50-50, so measures like this would need the support of 50 Democratic senators, plus 10 Republicans, in order to avoid the filibuster mechanism to stop the proposals.

Finance experts warn that Biden's plan would be costly for the government, increasing the federal deficit by as much as $ 120 billion in just one year.

The benefit is that it could curb child poverty in the country by more than 50%, according to Columbia University studies cited by the newspaper.
