Panama confirms first case of covid variant detected in South Africa

The Ministry of Health of Panama confirmed a positive case of the new variant of coronavirus detected for the first time in South Africa.

Panama confirmed this Friday the first positive case of the covid-19 variant detected in South Africa.

This was announced by the Ministry of Health this Friday in a statement.

"This is a 40-year-old passenger, born in Zimbabwe, who entered the country on January 5 from South Africa and had previously made a stopover in the Netherlands before arriving in Panama," the entity said in the official note.

After testing positive for the variant, the patient remained isolated, complying with the Panama protocol, according to the Ministry of Health.

To date, Panama registers 4,944 deaths related to covid-19 and 305,752 confirmed cases.
