On the face of it, this should be in Merav Michaeli's pocket.

In a quick review of the final list of candidates in the primaries for the Labor Party leadership to be held tomorrow (Sunday), her name is best known, and she is the only incumbent politician running for office.

Apart from her, there are six other candidates, most of whom are almost anonymous in the Israeli public, and some of whom are not even recognized in the party territory that remains in the party.

Watched and judged: Avi Shaked, Yitzhak Time, Gil Beilin, David Landsman, Ofer Segman, Nava Katz.

In all parameters - recognizable, prominent, political experience and past of successful contests - her hand is on the top.

Michaeli is the last survivor fighting for the last remnants of the historic ruling party.

In the past year, the party has not passed the blocking percentage in any survey, but it has another 37,000 registered functionaries and historical assets that are valued at more than one hundred million shekels, as well as current debts of several million.

After announcing he would not run, the alleged race was decided.

In the last decade, the work has known four chairmen - Shelly Yachimovich, Yitzhak Herzog, Avi Gabay, and Amir Peretz;

She reached a record high of 24 seats and a low of three, and apart from Michaeli, Peretz, and Itzik Shmuli - none of the dozens of people who were there are no longer in the arena today.

Michaeli is the one who fought to hold the primaries in the first place - she prepared for this race and held it for months - the other competitors have only joined the race in the last few days.

After Shmuli announces that he will not run and he is looking for a new political home - the race is apparently decided, and she is the favorite who should sail lightly towards victory.

Only her biggest enemy is not on the field at all - but affects the rules of the game, and even runs a player on his behalf.

Outgoing chairman Peretz is using his full political power and connections in the party apparatus to prevent her from winning - and to help his associate, businessman Avi Shaked, win the job.

Although Peretz retired, he struggled to maintain his grip on the reins

Although Peretz has announced that he is resigning and not running for the next Knesset, behind the scenes he is struggling to maintain his grip on the reins, to anchor the party as his power base in the future race he plans for the presidency in a few months.

Once upon a time, Michaeli was one of the closest to Peretz, and was even considered his foster daughter.

She supported him in all his candidacies for Labor leadership and he helped her advance in the primaries to the front of the list.

But their entire glorious past was missed and thrown in the trash after the last election, when he and Molly entered the government with blue and white, and it remained in opposition in a special rebel status.

The struggle between them has intensified in recent months against the background of Peretz's attempts to maintain control of the party.

At first, he tried to cancel the primaries and transfer the decision on the identity of the chairman to the Labor Party conference - a limited forum of several thousand deputies. Run for chairman.

Michaeli managed to thwart the move through the courts, which in an unusual move intervened in the party's internal proceedings and ordered the holding of primaries among the functionaries according to the party's regulations.

Peretz also offered him the leadership of the party.

Peretz did not give up.

His men publicly courted Ehud Barak and tried to lead a move to place him as an agreed-upon candidate for the party leadership - without elections.

A few hours before Barak announced that he had decided not to run, Shaked announced that he had joined the race, and since then - Peretz's people have been running the campaign for him.

Shaked, a businessman who made his fortune from the 888 gambling site, had previously competed for a place on the job list, under the branding "Socialist Millionaire," and failed.

In the party's internal circles, he is best known as a "millionaire who is a friend of Amir Peretz."

He denied that Peretz initiated his candidacy, but his advisers and associates run his election headquarters and distribute messages of support thanks to him.

According to sources at work, Peretz's entire field formation was mobilized for the purpose.

In addition, Michaeli's headquarters have serious allegations of difficulties in the party apparatus, which is controlled by Peretz's people, with the aim of lowering the turnout and making it harder for free voters compared to organized and maintained commanders;

The party's management waited until the end of Peretz's legal proceedings and appeals to determine the election procedures, and even then delayed the publication of the ballot paper until the last minute.

Peretz uses all his political power and connections in the party apparatus to assist him.

The map that was compiled - especially convenient for Peretz but less convenient for Michaeli.

For example, no polling stations were set up in the center of Tel Aviv - where there are close to 1,800 functionaries, but in Moshav Brosh, where one of Peretz's associates lives, there are actually polling stations - for 46 registered functionaries.

Added to this is Corona's anxiety - the party's election committee refused to respond to requests and requests to examine remote voting methods that would allow voting without any fear of illness or infection, and insisted on voting at the polls.

This vote may alienate the older functionaries, who form the backbone of party activists.

There are those at work who think that this is only Michaeli's "Guild", and that tomorrow evening she will be announced as the next chairman of the Labor Party as expected. If the freelancers prefer to stay at home, the advantage of the organized commanders will increase and it will have a hard time catching the lead.

The great war is not over the last electoral shards left over from the glorious past of the Labor Party but over what the future holds for it, especially the nearest.

The results of the primaries at work are eagerly awaited by all party leaders in the center-left bloc, and they will signal the opening of the campaign of connections and unions ahead of the closing of the lists next weekend.

It is estimated that if Michaeli wins, she will join Ron Huldai and the "Israelis" party.

Maybe they will even run with the mythological "truth" note, and turn to the hearts of the Mapainiks at the ballot box. With him out of the question

, Labor officials will choose tomorrow whether to give Michaeli one last soul option, or to allow Peretz to slowly end his historic path.
