Few new members, missing contributions - how the corona pandemic affects the sports clubs

Club sports are currently not allowed due to the Corona crisis.

In some clubs this has led to a decline in membership.

The local newspaper checked with the clubs.

District -

Do sports in a club, this is currently not possible due to the corona pandemic.

Sports have not been allowed to take place since mid-November.

It seems reasonable to assume that more members are turning their backs on the associations - and this is actually the case with some associations in the Dachau district.

SV Haimhausen

With 1500 members, SV Haimhausen was one of the larger clubs in the district last year.

So far there has been

no more resignations than in previous years, as secretary Sabine Hirner says.

However, "many members have asked what about the membership fees now" if things continue like this in 2021.

Newer members in particular had inquired of the association.

In 2020 there were around 50 percent fewer admissions, as sport was only played less than half of the year.

The tennis hall is the biggest source of income. The hall is open and playable all year round.

The winter subscription runs from October to April - and has hardly been used so far.

“Our main source of income is missing,” says Hirner.

The costs continue despite the lockdown.

"You have to keep the sports facilities in good condition, there are maintenance costs." And the bureaucracy poses a major challenge when applying for help. "For this the association would first need a tax advisor with whom we can apply."

TSV Karlsfeld

The tennis hall is also a great source of income at TSV Karlsfeld, which is open to subscribers from October to April.

"It is usually fully booked," says club president Rüdiger Meyer.

But even here the game is paralyzed.

In the statistics, there are just over 600 exits, compared with 200 entries.

In normal years the numbers are balanced.

"Around 500 entries and 500 exits," says Meyer.

According to the club president, the newcomers go back to the beginning of 2020, when the corona virus was not yet raging.

But now “people don't see any reason to join a club”.

Every exit means less income for the main club, says Meyer.

He cannot yet say in which sectors there were how many withdrawals.

“In any case, a lot of people got out of the swimming pool and the theater department went out completely.” Despite the difficult situation, there is still hope for better times.

“We look forward to growing again,” he says.

ASV Dachau

ASV Dachau, the largest sports club in the city with 3750 members, has so far been spared a large wave of layoffs.

There have been around two to three percent withdrawals so far.

"We actually got away with it with a black eye," says chairman Andreas Wilhelm.

He is very grateful for the solidarity of his members.

Despite the dormant sports business, the ASV has now increased its membership fees by two percent.

“That is the regular increase,” says Wilhelm.

The chairman justified this in a circular stating that the ASV had to cope with a six-figure loss of income due to canceled events, a closed club restaurant, lower course fees and no subsidies.

The systems must continue to be maintained, the association has obligations to its staff and cannot shut down the systems to "zero", otherwise they would be damaged.

"When the sport starts again, the members want to be in front of good seats."

TSV 1865 Dachau

So far, "many members have shown solidarity," says the chairman of TSV 1865 Dachau, Wolfgang Moll.

The number of people leaving is currently around five percent.

"If the lockdown lasts longer, it could be ten percent," said Moll.

The TSV has a total of around 2500 members.

But since sports have been inactive for so long, “we don't have any admissions,” says Moll.

At least some financial help comes from the state government.

“Our previous grants will be doubled - that's for sure,” says Moll.

TSV Altomünster

The TSV Altomünster has about ten percent leaving members.

This means that the number of members is just under 1000. The chairman Georg Schmid is nevertheless confident that the association can bring back those who have left after the Corona crisis.

That's why he's not afraid for the future of the club.

"I just hope now that it will continue soon."

TSV Indersdorf

TSV Indersdorf recorded 80 resignations last year.

However, this has nothing to do with Corona, as Chairman Bernhard Wetzstein says.

"They correspond to the normal fluctuation." The tennis division even recorded growth.

This brings the entire association to around 1160 members.

SpVgg Hebertshausen

The SpVgg Hebertshausen has "at the moment no significant loss of membership", says the chairman Marco Schwarz.

He reckons that there will be resignations when the contributions are collected in February.

For the club, which has almost 700 members, a sharp drop in fees could mean a problem.

“We have to finance ourselves with that,” says Schwarz.

“The maintenance of the space and the building is largely financed from the contributions.” In addition, there is the lack of rental income due to the empty hall in the clubhouse and the termination of the club host.

"At the moment we are looking for a new host."

TSV Schwabhausen

The chairman of TSV Schwabhausen, Willi Jais, is pleased that its 1450 members are "relatively loyal".

There is fluctuation at all times.

"Mostly there are around 100 entries and exits," says Jais.

He sees the community at risk.

Another bad thing is that the members lacked opportunities to move around.

He is especially sorry for the children in this regard.
