Donald Trump: Impeachment, the second
Photo: JIM BOURG / REUTERS
The first time, Donald Trump did it behind closed doors.
During a phone call in July 2019, he urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi to investigate his rival Joe Biden.
Only a handful of senior government officials and advisers attended the conversation.
Only a complaint from a whistleblower made the matter public in a roundabout way.
The second time, Trump did it in front of everyone: from a lectern on a stage, the White House as a backdrop.
"We're going to the Capitol," he called to his followers - and his followers went off and attacked the Capitol.
Whoever wanted could watch.
A number of witnesses had to be heard in the first impeachment proceedings, which involved the Ukraine affair.
Now the facts are essentially open.
It's about Trump's role in storming the Capitol, actually this time it could be quick.
But the situation is confused for several reasons.
Trump has left office and must organize his defense.
His successor Biden has his own agenda, which he wants to bring Congress to the table as soon as possible.
In the Senate, the Democrats have taken control, and in the Republicans, various actors are exploring how to relate to the legacy of the ex-president.
