Mountain sports are booming, as the DAV Miesbach notices.

Recently the number of members rose to over 2000. We spoke to Jonas Gabler about this.

The 38-year-old vocational school teacher is active as a press officer on the board of the DAV section and is himself an enthusiastic summiteer.

Mr. Grabler, the Miesbacher Alpenverein section cracked the 2000 mark for the first time.

How do you explain the increase?

In fact, we were unable to identify any specific trigger in the past year - not even the corona pandemic had a noticeable effect.

The fact that we now have just over 2000 members is the result of a trend that has been evident for years: an average of 70 to 100 new members join each year.

The enthusiasm for mountain sports is simply increasing immensely.

Has it always been like this?

For comparison: in 1997 we only had 500 members, in 2011 we had 1000, four years later 1500 and now 2000. With the founding date of 1876, the Miesbach section is one of the 25 oldest of the DAV.

The membership of our section in the DAV climbing center Oberbayern Süd gave us a strong boost in 2004.

Members get huge discounts here - that attracts.

The Miesbacher Hütte on Spitzingsee is also appealing.

Members have priority when booking - another member magnet.

The flow of visitors to the mountains is currently the subject of criticism.

Is the high membership also a problem?

I wouldn't see it that way.

Of course we are on the one hand a sports association whose members go to the mountains.

But we also call for nature-friendly action, take care of the maintenance of paths and sensitize visitors.

For example, we work a lot with Florian Bossert, area manager at the district office.

The DAV also provides ongoing information about nature-friendly ski touring and sets up signs for protected wildlife areas.

And on the hiking and climbing tours, for which members can register, we always provide information about nature conservation and adhere to the appropriate times and rules.

I cannot imagine that members of the DAV are the ones who go up the Taubenstein at night with the ghetto blaster.

Could tours and courses take place this year despite the pandemic?

Before March and in summer there was still a lot going on.

For example, one-day and multi-day ski tours and high-altitude tours - an absolute hit in our section, by the way - fortunately still took place.

Climbing and mountaineering courses as well as avalanche awareness are also in high demand.

Many hiking and mountain bike tours and climbing courses, especially in spring and early summer, have been canceled.

... a lost year?

No, we already had numerous highlights.

Our film evening “Bergnarrisch” had to be canceled in April.

We then made up for it on the Berghof OpenAir site in Agatharied.

We were so excited that we want to join the Berghofer Filmfest again this year.

Our climbing group "H3" for people with disabilities has another event to celebrate: The Raiffeisenbank in the Oberland has awarded the group the "Stern des Sports" in bronze.

The group is likely to use the money won for a climbing trip.

Were there any personal highlights for you?

In mid-June I was out and about in Tyrol with a mountain speci on the small and large Bettelwurf.

To look out over the Inn valley from 2726 meters - that was a great moment on a dream day.

I was also on the Watzmann.

I remember the tour over the small east wall well.

How does it look this year?

Our program is ready.

We are still broadly positioned, offers for adults, children and young people have been prepared.

As in the previous year, we have to cancel some appointments without replacement.

But since we don't know when the pandemic will end, we just keep planning and hopefully can join the program at some point.

Until then, of course, I and many others will miss the club life.

After all, the experiences in the mountains also live from sharing, telling and exchanging ideas with others.

Still, I'm in good spirits that things will soon be up again.
