Two strong tremors shook Chilean territory a minute apart on Saturday.
First: an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on the Richter scale registered in Antarctica at 8:36 p.m. local time, 216 kilometers from the O'Higgins scientific base.
Authorities asked to leave the coasts due to a tsunami risk with a text message that
was mistakenly sent to cell phones across the country
, authorities said.
Minutes later another strong tremor, this time of 5.6, which was felt in the capital, Santiago.
The epicenter was just 30 kilometers from Santiago, which explains why it felt so strong, as residents report.
The National Tsunami Alarm System (Snam) of the Navy's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service issued a bulletin reporting that the characteristics of the earthquake did not meet "the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami off the coast of Chile."
