Hundreds of people in France shared online the experiences of sexual abuse they experienced as children, and last night (Saturday) President Emanuel Macron addressed them with an excited call and said: "We believe in you. You will never be alone again."

Macron's remarks come after the French government on Thursday promised to toughen child rape laws.

The government's promise came a few days after a new hashtag flooded the country's social networks:

Hundreds of people who were sexually abused as children began to describe their personal and difficult stories online in the past week.

Macron did not remain indifferent, and in a video he posted on social media, he promised that there would be meetings about sexual abuse and its prevention with every child who studies in the education system in schools.

He added that the state health system would fund psychological treatment for children who are victims of sexual abuse, and acknowledged that more needs to be done to address the issue.

"Childhood stolen from children during family vacations, or times that were supposed to be innocent," Macron said.

"These testimonies, these words, these cries, no one can ignore them anymore, from sexual violence against our children. Now is our time to act."

Evidence in the country began to flow into the networks after it was reported earlier this month that the Paris prosecutor had opened a criminal investigation on charges of incest against senior political commentator Oliver Domel.

The investigation was opened following a book written by Doomel's stepdaughter, Camila Kushner, who accused him of sexually abusing her twin brother in the late 1980s, when the two were 13.

Doomel, a well-known figure in the local media who appeared on television and radio in political debates, claimed He is a target for "personal attacks", but because he is resigning from his educational positions at universities.

Kushner's brother confirmed the attack to Le Monde, and the networks began to be filled with personal descriptions.

"No one can ignore them anymore."

One of those who shared their story was Lauren Boya, 49, who shared how he was raped as a child by his older brother.

Boya, a police officer and head of an organization that fights child abuse, said he was raped when he was six to nine by his brother, who was ten years his senior.

"I really hope the company has the courage to tackle this problem," Boya said.

"We need to stop looking away."

The World Health Organization says international studies show that one in five women and one in 13 men have experienced childhood sexual abuse.

Experts add that since there is a shroud of secrecy and shame surrounding the issue, it is likely that there are more cases than are known.
