Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen: Municipalities struggle with too much garbage in public areas

It is always a nuisance: Sometimes the packaging of the snack is simply thrown into the bushes on the excursion, sometimes the bulky waste is illegally dumped in the forest.

In many places in the district, this problem has worsened in recent months in connection with the corona pandemic.

The solution approaches of the municipality look different.

Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen - "On the whole, we can't really complain," says Birte Otterbach, spokeswoman for the city of Bad Tölz.

“The citizens usually pay close attention to the cleanliness of the city, and some employees in the depot are also very committed to it.” Nevertheless, there are always inglorious exceptions.

This was particularly noticeable last summer.

Most of the people spent the beautiful days at home and enjoyed the outdoors.

Increasingly, they settled in the urban green spaces, for example on the Isar.

"Some of them forgot to take their rubbish back with them," says Otterbach.

The community of Jachenau can tell you a thing or two about that.

Mainly in the summer months the place was flooded with visitors - and garbage.

“Especially on the shores of the Walchensee”, says Felix Kellner, director of the community.

“There were just too many people here with too little understanding of nature.” Kellner sees the problem not only with day-trippers.

Mobile homes are also a problem.

“It is easy to feel unobserved, especially at the lake, and you are tempted to simply empty your rubbish and toilet in nature,” says Kellner.

Too much rubbish, too little understanding of nature

In Wackersberg they regret that the Ramadama campaign could not take place last year.

“Usually the primary school in Wackersberg organizes such activities,” says a member of the community.

The situation in Wolfratshausen is assessed similarly.

"The number of illegal bulky waste deposits has increased significantly this year", explains Matthias Schmidberger, foreman of the construction depot.

He sees the cause of this in the pandemic or lockdown.

"Lots of people just have time to sort things out properly," says Schmidberger - unfortunately this sometimes happens at the expense of nature.

This is also a problem in Dietramszell.

"The bulky waste is usually next to used clothing containers," said a member of the community, "or in nature."

How one can solve the problem, the churches see differently.

“I'm afraid that more rubbish bins won't reduce the amount of rubbish,” says Felix Kellner from Jachenau.

On the contrary: "Many people could feel invited to leave their rubbish".

This is also feared in Wackersberg.

"So far we have simply made the experience that people are increasingly throwing away garbage in public garbage cans instead of taking it home." The aim is to counteract this with fewer garbage cans.

"We just have to rethink," said the community worker from Wackersberg.

Willingness to change

In the Jachenau, at least more toilets are to be installed next summer.

“We hope that at least fewer people will do their business in nature,” says Kellner.

In Bad Tölz, on the other hand, especially in summer, people rely on the garbage can and staff growth, for example on the Isar.

“We started there four years ago to set up more rubbish bins in the summer,” says press spokeswoman Birte Otterbach.

But one also wants to appeal to the awareness of the citizens.

There is a willingness to change.

“Especially with the younger generation,” says Otterbach.

"More and more often, young people are organizing their own Ramadama campaigns in the city."
