US President Joe Biden canceled the controversial Keystone XL gas pipeline project, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his "disappointment" during the first phone call between them since the inauguration of the Democratic president on Wednesday.

The pipeline is designed to transport 830,000 barrels of oil daily from fields in Alberta, Canada, to the state of Nebraska, and to join an existing pipeline.

Groups of natives living in the area and activists for the environment have been fighting this project for more than a decade, and it continued under the direction of former Republican President Donald Trump after he was arrested by his predecessor Barack Obama, whose deputy served as Biden.

According to the company that built the pipeline, TC Energy Corp, about a thousand construction jobs will be lost in the coming weeks due to the cancellation of the venture, which was supposed to launch the Canadian oil industry.

According to Trudeau's bureau, during the half-hour conversation that took place last night, Trudeau "emphasized the important economic and energy gains in our bilateral relations as well as his support for energy workers."

However, the statement said the two shared common values around a range of issues such as climate change and global leadership, as well as cooperation in the fight against the corona plague.

The White House said that "the president acknowledged Prime Minister Trudeau's disappointment with regard to the decision to revoke the approval of the Piston XL oil pipeline, and reiterated his commitment to maintain an active bilateral dialogue and deepen cooperation with Canada."

Despite the controversy surrounding the pipeline, the two leaders are due to meet next month.

Trudeau's office said they had also discussed expanding security and Arctic cooperation, as well as the "arbitrary arrest" of two Canadian citizens in China.

Trudeau even urged Biden to repeal the tariffs imposed by Trump on wood products from Canada.

Trudeau, who discussed the project with Biden back in November, is not expected to take retaliatory action as demanded by Alberta Prime Minister Jason Kennedy, who called the cancellation of the "insult and blow to the stomach" pipeline project after his government invested $ 1.5 billion in the project last year.

The Canadian prime minister described Biden's presidency as a "new era" in relations between the two neighbors, and told reporters after the conversation with him that he was looking forward to working with him.

He praised the commitment of the new President of the United States to fight climate change.

Close relations traditionally between the United States and Canada were undermined during Trump's tumultuous tenure.

In 2018, it imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, igniting a trade war with Canada.

The crisis became personal at the 7G summit held later that year in Canada, after Trudeau reiterated his opposition to the caps.

Trump said his position cost Canada "a great deal of money" and called him "a liar and very weak."

A year later, Trump said Trudeau was "hypocritical" after being caught by the cameras while imitating the President of the United States.

The volume of trade between the two North American countries is one of the largest in the world, and they exchange goods and services on a daily basis in the order of about two billion dollars.
