The Republican Party is tearing itself apart.

A few days after Joe Biden arrived in the White House, and the loss of his majority in the Senate, the party is deeply divided between a nationalist and popular base which remains with Trump and a more conservative apparatus which seeks to take its distances from the former president.

The past two months have been nightmarish for Republicans.

Trump's attempts to challenge and then overturn the presidential ballot, which culminated in his supporters' assault on Congress in mid-session, significantly tarnished the party's image and the incumbent's record, but also placed the elected in a dilemma.
