The primaries for the leadership of the Labor Party will take place today (Sunday) between the hours of 19: 00-11: 00 and at the end it will be decided whether MK Merav Michaeli, the well-known and leading candidate among the seven candidates, will be the next party chairman.

37,104 functionaries will be able to reach each of the 79 polling sites, which will operate in accordance with the Corona's guidelines.

Apart from her, there are also businessman Avi Shaked, who is close to the outgoing party chairman Amir Peretz, Adv. Gil Beilin, son of former minister Yossi Beilin, social activist Yitzhak Time, David Landsman, Ofer Segman, and Nava Katz.

Michaeli is considered a favorite, but her victory depends on the turnout and the turnout of "free" supporters and functionaries who will overcome the Peretz camp, which supports Shaked's candidacy.

Voting will take place using a digital system, at polling stations behind a curtain at 70 polling stations across the country.

The Corona regulations exclude participation in the primaries from the quarantine, so that every functionary can vote in any ballot box he wants, without the 1000-meter limit from home being applied to him.

In order to adapt the primaries to the corona era, the voting sites will operate according to the purple character format - and at each site a corona will be responsible.

Gloves, alcohol and special protective equipment will be placed at the polls and each voter will undergo a heat test and will be required to fill out a health declaration.

However, the party estimates that a large proportion of older functionaries will be afraid to get to the physical vote if they have not yet been vaccinated.

The results will be announced by party secretary general Eran Hermoni and election committee chairman Yitzhak Shimoni shortly after the vote closes in the evening.

Hermoni boasted yesterday that "the Labor Party is a democratic party, the only one to hold a preliminary election for chairman and list on such a scale ahead of the 24th Knesset elections."

Although Labor does not pass the blocking percentage in polls, Hermoni said he This democracy will then lead to a trend that will put the Labor Party on its feet.

"There are many in the public who have confidence in the values of Labor and love it, and these primaries will be the spark that will rekindle it."

According to the political system, if Michaeli wins, she will join Ron Huldai's Israeli party. Will run and some of the places will be realistic if the party enters into connections and unions in the center-left camp until the lists close next Thursday night.

Michaeli's path to the party leadership seems paved after last week Minister Itzik Shmuli announced that he would not run, when if he had decided to join the race he would have been Michaeli's main rival.

The day before, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak announced that he had decided not to run for the party leadership, after pressure was exerted on him by activists to run.

The former party chairman, the last to lead the party to victory in the 1999 election when he defeated Benjamin Netanyahu, considered the possibility - but decided to give it up.

About two weeks ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the party's primaries would take place on January 24. Conducted by Michaeli against the current party chairman, Amir Peretz, who tried to cancel the primaries and transfer the election to the party conference, a more limited body.

Peretz announced last month that he does not intend to run again for the party leadership in the upcoming elections, nor for a place on the list, but it is estimated that he still intends to run in the presidential election this summer.
