Merav Michaeli won the Labor Party primaries today (Sunday) with 77.5% of the vote, and was elected the next chair of the party.

Following the victory, Michaeli will be the only woman to head a party in the upcoming elections.

It is expected to negotiate unions and connections in the center-left bloc, and according to estimates in the political system, it will join Ron Huldai's Israeli party.



Michaeli fought in the courts to hold the primaries in the first place, while outgoing party chairman Amir Peretz tried to overturn them and transfer the decision on the identity of the chairman and the list to the Labor Party committee, which includes several thousand deputies.

Peretz even tried to help his associate, businessman Avi Shaked, win the race, but Shaked came in second place by a large margin from Michaeli with only 19% of the vote.



The job list primaries will be held next week, two days before the lists close.

In today's election, 9,651 voters, which is only 26% of the 37,102 eligible voters in the party.

Merav Michaeli was elected first place with 77.5% of the voters, Avi Shaked came second with 19.08% and Gil Beilin came third with 2.37% of the vote.
