London - Sana

A new opinion poll revealed that the majority of voters in Scotland and Northern Ireland want a referendum on secession from Britain, which would make the United Kingdom face a constitutional crisis that would impose pressure on it.

According to the poll published today by the British newspaper Sunday Times, 50 percent of Scottish voters support organizing a referendum on independence, and the percentage of supporters of secession rises to 52 percent when undecided voters are not counted.

The poll also showed that 51 percent of voters in Northern Ireland wanted a referendum on secession, another rift that could undermine UK unity.

Scottish Prime Minister Nicolas Sturge, leader of the separatist Scottish National Party, demanded months ago to organize a new independence referendum after 55 percent of Scots rejected the idea in a 2014 referendum.

Sturgeon considers that Brexit, which is opposed by the majority of Scots, is a motive for secession from Britain and hopes that Scotland will join the European Union in the event of its independence.

While 51.9 percent of Britons supported withdrawing from the European Union in 2016, 62 percent of Scots opposed it, but the decision to organize a new referendum belongs to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who strongly rejects the idea.

And in the event that the Scottish National Party wins a big victory in the local elections scheduled for next May, this will increase pressure on London to accept the organization of a referendum.

Johnson had confirmed his opposition to holding a referendum on the independence of Scotland from Britain, considering that such a matter should not happen until after a whole generation had passed.
