Skiing - no news.

Due to the corona pandemic, the railways and lifts are not allowed to travel.

Nevertheless, numerous winter sports enthusiasts cavort in the ski areas and completely ignore the fact that they are in the great outdoors.

  • Many ski tourers in the Garmisch Classic ski area do not follow the rules and put themselves in danger.

  • Apart from the World Cup course, no slopes are groomed and therefore no avalanches are blown up.

  • At the Oberammergau piston, routes are prepared for touring.

Here, too, 15 euros are due.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen / Oberammergau

- The next snow is coming, according to the German weather service it should snow again this morning.

It also attracts more ski tourers to the Garmisch Classic ski area again.

But not all of them stick to the given rules of the game - to the incomprehension of the employees of the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn (BZB) and the volunteers who are involved in the Alpspitz area avalanche commission.

Chairman Andreas Schütz still clearly remembers the day after the first massive snowfalls.

He and other members of the panel of experts got a picture of the situation in the ski area, recognized the great danger of avalanches and still had to watch a group of tourers simply walk past them towards the Hochalm.

The reference to the avalanche situation "didn't interest them at all".

Schütz says it soberly, you are powerless against the irrationality of some winter sports enthusiasts.

"It would be nice that they think ahead." For example, to the rescuers, who then have to put themselves in danger in order to get them out again in an emergency.

Lots of ski tourers: snow groomer drivers have to interrupt work

The snow groomer drivers who are currently preparing the World Cup course should also take them into account.

Only a few days ago they had to interrupt their work.

"Because so many tourers were on the road, that was too unsafe for them," confirms BZB spokeswoman Verena Altenhofen.

Only when the curfew began after 9 p.m. could her colleagues continue.

Because in order to prepare the steep sections on the Kandahar and Olympia runs, the caterpillar hangs on the rope.

Anyone who collides with it risks his life.

Ski area closed to tourists due to Corona - only the race track is being prepared

After the ski area is still closed to tourists due to the corona pandemic, the BZB is not preparing any slopes apart from the race track.

In connection with this, there will be no avalanche explosions.

As a result, “you have to be very careful,” emphasizes Schütz.

The assessment of the snow situation, in which the wind also plays a major role, is very complex.

So if you don't know your way around, only start equipped with the latest technology and cannot operate it, he strongly advises against tours in the great outdoors.

This is exactly what the ski area is currently considered to be, after all, the BZB railways don't run.

So if you are currently on touring skis, snowshoes or toboggan between Hausberg and Osterfelder, you do so at your own risk.

Garmisch Classic: If there is no skiing, the slopes and snow cannons are not secured

"If there is no operation, then we don't secure the slopes and snow cannons," confirms Altenhofen.

Only to protect operational processes or supply trips are blown up.

According to Schütz, there is also the Hochalmweg.

The connection between Kreuzeck and Hochalm is considered a registered road and must be kept free by order of the security authorities.

Time and again, ski tourers create a connection between the slopes and the 15 euros they have to pay at the Hausberg and Kreuzeck valley stations.

“They have a cleared parking lot and toilets at their disposal,” says Altenhofen.

A Garmisch-Partenkirchner, who does not want to be named, is still angry about this fee.

According to him, the BZB acts completely irresponsible and risks accidents by not preparing the slopes.

The Oberammergau piston also costs 15 euros

Against this background, preparations are made at the flask in Oberammergau.

"Touring takes place whether we like it or not," says managing director Klement Fend.

In order to have orderly conditions, he also charges 15 euros in the much smaller ski area.

To do this, he has the parking lot cleared, opens the toilets, assigns an employee to act as a contact person and ensures - “not every day” - that the slope is groomed.

“We are also prepared to be able to open as quickly as possible.” Fend is still hoping that the cable cars and lifts will be able to operate after the lockdown.
