Two prominent leaders of Brazil's indigenous tribes have asked the International Criminal Court to investigate President Jair Bolsonaro on suspicion of "crimes against humanity".
They accuse the far-right leader of environmental damage, unprecedented killing and persecution of the peoples living in the Amazon thickets.
Chief Rauni of Tokatir, the leader with the Kiapo, and Chief Elmir Naraymoga Suri, the leader of the Fighter Syrian tribe, filed the lawsuit in the tribunal sitting in The Hague on Friday.
According to the lawsuit, since Bolsonaro took office in January 2019, "the destruction of the Amazon forest has accelerated unprecedentedly."
They say that since the rate of deforestation has skyrocketed "by 34.5% a year, the assassination of indigenous leaders has reached an 11-year high and environmental law enforcement agencies have collapsed or are facing threats."
The two leaders said the killings, forced relocation of local peoples and their persecution constituted "crimes against humanity".
The Bolsonaro administration has promoted legislation that eases restrictions on mining, oil and gas exploration and agriculture in the Amazon region.

Environmental activists want to add the destruction of the environment - EcoSide - to the list of crimes that the court is investigating in The Hague, along with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
The issue was raised by the Maldives and Vanuatu before the General Assembly of Bin Din in December 2019.
"This situation, the most dramatic in the last ten years, is a direct product of Jair Bolsonaro's meditation," which the plaintiffs, who also marked the mining companies, want to "remove. All the barriers to looting the Amazon's wealth. "
It added that "the destruction of the Amazon rainforest is a direct danger not only to Brazilians but to all of humanity."
In July last year, health care workers in Brazil also called on the court to investigate Bolsonaro on suspicion of crimes against humanity for his treatment of the corona plague.
A month earlier, Chief Rauni had said in an interview with AFP that Bolsonaro was trying to use the plague to destroy the indigenous peoples.
The vaccination campaign in Brazil has come under sharp criticism for being delayed and running chaotically, partly due to the opposition of Bolsonaro, who has once again plummeted in the polls.
