2021-01-24T15:28:29.814Z

Due to the health crisis, holy water fonts have been emptied in churches to avoid any risk of contamination. The diocese of Vannes has found the solution: a pedal distributor.

In this period of pandemic, strict and unprecedented instructions have been applied in all Catholic churches in France.

The fonts were emptied, in order to avoid any coronavirus contamination for the faithful.

According to

France Info

, the diocese of Vannes has found a solution to make holy water accessible without risk to the faithful.

He installed a pedal distributor at the entrance to Saint-Pierre-de-Vannes cathedral, right next to the one for the hydroalcoholic gel.

Thus, after disinfecting their hands, the faithful can again sign themselves with holy water.

In March 2020, all the holy water fonts were emptied in the churches for health reasons.

Likewise, it is no longer possible to drink wine from the chalice and to carry out the “

exchange of peace

” during mass.

Holy water was lacking among the faithful.

We were asked to empty our giant clams which could be a risk of contagion, and we did.

We had to find a system that would allow us to combine sanitation with the spirit of our Christian life, ”

Father Patrice Marivin, Archpriest of Saint-Pierre Cathedral, explained to France 3- Bretagne.

The diocese of Vannes is the first in Brittany to have had this initiative.

This unusual installation aims to rediscover the sacred meaning of the place.

We are all hurt by what is going on at the moment

, adds Father Patrice Marivin to France Info

.

(…)

It is not a decoration, it is there to give back meaning, depth and inner peace. ”

This system is not an isolated case, since it has been implemented in other regions of France.

According to

La Dépêche du Midi

, a holy water dispenser has also been installed in the Notre-Dame-de-Marceille basilica in Limoux in Aude.

This clever idea was born in Italy in 2009, during the H1N1 influenza pandemic.

During times troubled by the virus, an Italian, Luchiano Marabese, came up with the idea of creating an electronic stoup, meeting hygiene needs.

This automatic font works like a soap dispenser.
