Tumble dryer in the test: In dry towels

2021-01-24T11:52:47.136Z

The test by Stiftung Warentest shows that good tumble dryers can be expensive, but don't have to be. When making a purchase decision, however, you should consider other things than just the price.

In testing current tumble dryers, the experts from Stiftung Warentest came to a clear conclusion: "If you don't have to worry about money, just take the Miele." Specifically, the testers mean the Miele TEB 155 WP, which, according to their tests, does almost everything right: it dries the laundry is good, easy to use and environmentally friendly.

He only allows himself to be inaccurate when displaying the remaining time.

But it has this trait in common with the other test candidates.

The indication of how long the appliances will need until the laundry has reached the desired degree of dryness is similar to the so-called Windows progress bar: It is not much more than an indication that something is happening there.

Many models are finished much faster than the ad says.

There were up to 80 minutes in between in the test, and that's bad.

Because the longer the dry laundry lies in the drum, the more it wrinkles.

The products recommended here were selected subjectively, but editorially independently.

Via the so-called affiliate links in the text, the publisher, but never the author individually, receives a small commission from the dealer for sales.

Conversely, some machines took longer than stated.

The KD-GHB7S7 GW2-DE from Sharp takes up to 47 minutes.

But it ended up in last place in the test anyway, also because of its high power consumption.

The compared to devices from 2016 is still comparatively low.

At that time, the electricity meter for drying clothes turned "up to four times faster than in 2020", according to Stiftung Warentest.

That’s a good thing at first, but you should definitely consider power consumption when making a purchase decision.

Over a period of use of ten years, the energy costs of the machines tested are between 500 and 700 euros, more than most devices cost to purchase.

The refrigerant makes the difference

At least as important should be the question of which refrigerant the devices use in their condenser to extract moisture from the air in the drum.

Older devices use fluorinated hydrocarbons called R134a for this.

This is also one of the reasons why such machines should be properly disposed of.

In the test field, only the Samsung DV71M5020 KW / EG is still operated with this refrigerant.

If the 320 grams of R134a were to escape into the environment from one of these machines, that would correspond to the climate impact of a 2700-kilometer drive in a mid-range car, the testers calculated.

The propane gas (R290) used instead in the current models only has the greenhouse effect of a 2.7 kilometer drive.

If you want to dry your laundry cheaply and yet in an environmentally friendly way, according to the test results you don't necessarily have to dig deep into your wallet.

Because just behind the Miele TEB 155 WP (identical to TSB 143 WP) with the test result "Good" (school grade 1.8), the Beko DE744RX1 lands with a price of 500 euros and the rating "Good" (school grade 2.2) second place.

In the middle, there was only the quality rating “satisfactory”, for example for the Siemens WT45V80.
