One building in Puchheim made a name for itself even before it was built: the PUC cultural center.

Its roof in particular is regarded as spectacular architecture to this day.

Actually, it should have been transparent.

Puchheim

- The roof of the PUC cultural center consists of a steel-wood framework that is covered with a white, textile membrane.

Such tent-like constructions have existed before, but only rarely for closed buildings.

In Puchheim it extends over 1000 square meters.

The unusual roof is also continued in an undulating terrain under which the underground car park is hidden.

The building was even awarded an architecture prize at the turn of the millennium.

The original architectural design even provided for a transparent roof.

However, an expert opinion warned of problems with noise protection and thermal insulation.

Among other things, music events after 10 p.m. could only have taken place to a limited extent.

Therefore, in 1996, the local council decided on a multi-layered and opaque roof with sufficient insulation.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the same year, and the foundation stone was laid in 1997 - accompanied by a concert.

After a little more than two years of construction and costs of 23.5 million marks, Puchheim celebrated the opening of its cultural center “PUC” in April 1999 with a two-week festival program with local and international artists.

The name was found through an open citizens' competition.

The idea of creating a community center had existed since the 1970s.

Even then, there was a growing need for space for cultural and social events.

The Catholic parish hall and the meeting room in the town hall no longer met the requirements.

In 1990 the municipal council chose the so-called strawberry field - a 3900 square meter area between Gut Harbeck and the Protestant church - as the location.

From 1991 to 1993 the community worked out a space program with the local cultural associations and organized a realization competition.

57 architectural offices took part.

The winner was the Lanz office from Munich with its membrane roof.

With a narrow majority of twelve to ten votes, the members of the municipal council voted in favor of this draft.

Today the PUC hosts numerous events under its roof: theater, dance, concerts, cabaret, readings or exhibitions.

Above all, this diversity enables the flexible space available.

The centerpiece is a large hall that can be divided into two separate rooms with 400 seats each.

On the north side there is a stage and artist dressing rooms.

A gallery on the south side offers additional seating.

In addition, the PUC has smaller event rooms, a gallery, a music practice room in the basement and a restaurant.
