Deaths and newly confirmed cases have risen steadily across the country since the beginning of October and recent daily figures are some of the highest since the start of the pandemic.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has registered at least 1,752,347 cases of covid-19 and 149,084 people have died from the virus in the country.

In Mexico City, the hardest hit city, nearly 30 public hospitals report having reached 100% capacity and many others are approaching that mark.
The capital's head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, has urged residents not to leave unless absolutely necessary.
In December, Mexico City and the state of Mexico were placed on "red level," the highest measure in the country's traffic light alert system for covid-19 restrictions.
The strictest measures included the closure of indoor dining rooms and only essential sectors such as transport, energy, health and construction remained open.
López Obrador, who rarely wears a mask, has faced widespread criticism for his handling of the pandemic.
Mexico has one of the lowest testing rates of any major country in the world, and testing is often expensive and difficult to come by.
