Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador said tonight (Monday) that he has been positively diagnosed with the corona virus, while his country is experiencing the deadliest week since the outbreak, which pushed the health care system in the capital to the limit of its capacity.
The 67-year-old president, who was a heavy smoker until he suffered a significant heart attack in 2013, said he was suffering from mild symptoms and that he was receiving treatment.
"As always, I am optimistic," tweeted the president, who has opposed wearing a mask in public since the virus arrived in Mexico ten months ago.
The veteran leftist, who returned to Mexico City after a three-day tour of the north and center of the country, said he would continue to work and plan to attend a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
However, he will narrow down his busy schedule, which he has been maintaining since taking office in December 2018.
Criticism of his treatment of the epidemic is growing, but even though the death toll is approaching 150,000 - one of the highest in the world - his popularity has only increased, according to a daily follow-up by polling firm Consulta Mitofsky.

Some of his closest advisers have been infected with the virus in recent months, but he has always insisted that he is in good health because he has been taking care of himself since the heart attack.
A senior health ministry official said experts were examining the president, and the ministry said they were examining his contacts in recent days, and that most of them would go into isolation.
One of them is Economy Minister Tatiana Klothier.
At the beginning of the plague, López Obrador called on residents to hug each other and continue to leave their homes.
He later urged them to stay at home, but refrained from imposing closures and even attacked European countries that did so.
Instead, it focused on increasing the capacity of hospitals rather than testing and locating contacts, and a kind of "traffic light" system in the various district states to avoid heavy economic damage.
However, hospitals in Mexico City are nearing collapse following an increase in the number of cases, and about 9,000 people have died in the past week in the country.
The government has come under fire for the vaccination campaign, which now relies solely on Pfizer's.
In his conversation with Putin, Lopez Obrador is set to discuss a possible purchase of the Russian vaccine "Sputnik 5" in order to give the country more options against the virus.
