Public events, meetings and an almost constant exhibition.

The usual routine of politics, by itself, does not agree with the protocols adopted to prevent coronavirus infections.

The pandemic has hit several presidents, ministers, senior officials and party leaders in the last year who recovered in a matter of weeks from COVID-19.The most theatrical contagion was probably that of former United States President Donald Trump, who exceeded the illness in full electoral campaign.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive last March, weeks after the virus became a global alert.

The Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, was infected in July.

One of the most recent cases in Europe was, in December, that of the French Emmanuel Macron, who was isolated for a few days in the La Lanterne mansion and was released from confinement at Christmas.

This Sunday, Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that he is infected and that he suffers from mild symptoms.

Before the president of Mexico, who is undergoing medical treatment, it happened to a large number of politicians.

Trump tested positive with just a month to go before the elections on November 3.

The case of the former US president is also one of the most emblematic for the moment it occurred and because he himself tried to exploit it electorally.

The massive acts of his campaign had been characterized by the relaxation of the protocols and a sector of his supporters has declared openly denial.

Trump, who spent three days in hospital, left the clinic with a triumphant message, comparing covid-19 with the flu and exhorting his bases: "Don't let it dominate your life!"

At the end of March, it was the British Boris Johnson who, after weeks of delays in the application of preventive measures, contracted coronavirus.

The UK Government has since adopted various restrictions and confinements.

Local authorities now say that the new strain known as the British variant of the disease is 30% more deadly in patients over 60 years of age.

Jair Bolsonaro represents the most extreme position.

The Brazilian president tested positive in at least three tests last summer.

Faithful to far-right ideological postulates, Bolsonaro not only understood the fight against the virus as a mere dichotomy between health and economic priorities, but he repeatedly defended the use of drugs without proven efficacy such as hydroxychloroquine and constantly underestimated the risks of the pandemic.

Moreover, according to an investigation published this weekend by EL PAÍS, he led an "institutional strategy for the spread of the virus."

In Brazil, more than 200,000 deaths have been registered.

Bolsonaro's behavior is only comparable in the region with that of Daniel Ortega's regime in Nicaragua, about whom, due to lack of transparency, nothing is known.

On the other hand, two other Central American presidents were infected and overcame covid-19.

Honduran Juan Orlando Hernández remained hospitalized for more than two weeks.

Guatemalan Alejandro Giammattei also tested positive last September.

Jeanine Áñez tested positive in July, when she was interim president of Bolivia.

Evo Morales, former president of that country, was infected two weeks ago and was discharged this Sunday.

In Colombia, the vice president, Marta Lucía Ramírez, and the Minister of Defense, Carlos Holmes Trujillo, have been in intensive treatment for days.

In Venezuela, several leaders from Nicolás Maduro's environment were infected.

Among them, Diosdado Cabello, considered the

number two

of Chavismo, former Minister Jorge Rodríguez, today president of the National Assembly, or Tareck El Aissami, Minister of Oil.

Other public figures who were infected were the President of Belarus, Aleksander Lukashenko, who went from denying the pandemic to claiming it is divine punishment after confessing that he too contracted the disease;

and also faced the virus, at the beginning of the first wave of spread, Prince Albert of Monaco.
