Joe Biden's Marshall Plan for the Corona Crisis

2021-01-25T19:28:41.804Z

More than 25 million Americans are or have been infected with the coronavirus. The new US president wants to master the pandemic with science and a lot of money - but he could fail because of the Republicans.

He had not been seen at this desk for a long time.

"They were basically gone for a few months," says one reporter.

"Are you back now?" Anthony Fauci pauses, grins, then laughs with relief: "I think so."

Fauci, America's most prominent corona expert, is in the press room of the White House - but this time there is no scowling Donald Trump lurking behind him to cut him off with his bizarre corona lies.

"The idea that you can now talk about things that you understand something," says Fauci, the longtime head of the US infection authority NIAID, "is a liberating feeling." No more gossip about hydroxychloroquine or other nonsense, he adds without even naming Trump once.

Because Fauci's new boss is Joe Biden, and everything changed when he took office, not just in the White House.

As a first official act, Biden rejects the failed corona policy of his predecessor and instead mobilizes a kind of US Marshall Plan to combat the pandemic - an immense feat of strength, which, however, comes a year too late and is sold more optimistically than reality allows.
