The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony-Anhalt has classified the AfD as a right-wing extremist suspected case. Party members can thus be monitored by the secret service. The evaluation is still pending at the federal level.

At the federal level, the party has been trying to prevent the move for days - now the Saxony-Anhalt constitutional protection is targeting the entire AfD in the state.

According to SPIEGEL information, the party in the state has been classified as a right-wing extremist »suspected case«.

The Mitteldeutsche Zeitung had previously reported on it.

According to the newspaper, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution bases its classification on an expert opinion that confirms that the state AfD has, among other things, attacked human dignity, rejects the rule of law and is hostile to democracy.

Classification enables extensive monitoring

A "suspected case" rating means that the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution is increasingly collecting information about the party and its members and evaluating them.

The classification also enables party members to be monitored.

Listening to telecommunications, for example, as well as reading e-mail traffic and messages on social media is permitted.

Monitoring of the entire party is also currently being considered at the federal level.

According to information from SPIEGEL, the Federal Ministry of the Interior is still examining how it is positioning itself to be classified as a suspected case by the Federal Office.

Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) had instructed the lawyers in his house to thoroughly bend over the approximately 1,000-page opinion of the constitutional protection officers on this issue with the BfV experts, the reason for the changed classification should be absolutely legally secure, a successful lawsuit the AfD will be excluded in the Bundestag election year.

AfD complains - Federal Office does not want to comment

The AfD, however, recently initiated legal steps as a precaution.

On Friday, she filed two lawsuits and two urgent motions before the administrative court in Cologne - the official seat of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution - to prevent classification as a suspected case.

A decision by the court was expected on Monday.

In the late afternoon, however, a spokesman announced that no more decisions would be taken today.

The Federal Office announced, however, that it will not announce anything about a possible classification of the AfD as a suspected case.

"In view of the ongoing proceedings and out of respect for the court, we are not making any public statements on this matter," it said.
