From Monday to Friday, the most powerful people in the world meet at the World Economic Forum - for the first time not in the ski paradise of Davos, but on the internet due to corona.

In his official opening speech, China's head of state Xi Jinping warned the world community of a "new cold war." "Such a confrontation would" end in a dead end, "Xi said.

Instead, he called on the global community to cooperate more in the fight against the coronavirus, stating that the pandemic was far from over and the economic recovery was still "rather shaky."

This time, the World Economic Forum is not taking place in Davos, Switzerland, as usual, but completely digital due to the pandemic.

During the exchange, where hundreds of representatives of the global political and business elite usually meet, there should still be important debates on the economic and social recovery after the coronavirus pandemic until Friday.

Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will give a speech on Tuesday.

Against the background of growing tensions between China, the USA and Europe, Xi Jinping also spoke out in favor of more dialogue and free world trade.

The world's problems cannot be solved by any country alone, said Xi Jinping.

Forming small alliances will only divide the world further.

Without going into the multitude of newly imposed US sanctions against China, Xi Jinping warned more generally against threatening other countries or imposing sanctions, decoupling the economies or disrupting supply chains.

Foreign trade policy should not be at the expense of other countries either.

Bringing G20 more responsibility

Xi sees a key role in international cooperation in the G20 - the international forum of the largest industrialized and emerging countries.

The group should work for a "close macroeconomic coordination of politics".

It should be used as the "main forum" for global economic governance.

Regardless of the criticism of persistent market barriers in China, Xi Jinping reassured that China wants to open up further.

It will also further liberalize trade and investment, which will create new opportunities for economic cooperation.

China got through the crisis year 2020 comparatively well.

The gross domestic product increased by 2.3 percent.

This is the worst performance since 1976, but no other large country has achieved growth.

For comparison: According to an initial estimate, the German economy has slumped by 5.0 percent.
