Again and again, neighbors from the Dinzler coffee roastery in Irschenberg complained about the pungent smell of the exhaust air.

Now the company has invested in new facilities.

Irschenberg -

In order to let the scent of fresh coffee waft around your nose, some Irschenbergers didn't even have to pick up beans, powder or capsules themselves.

Depending on the direction of the wind, they only had to stick their heads out of the window or door.

Quite a few, however, did exactly the opposite.

They preferred to barricade themselves in order to escape the penetrating roasted aromas from the exhaust pipes of the Dinzler coffee roastery.

This is no longer necessary, the company announced.

After an intensive professional exchange, the decision was made to replace the roasting systems.

"The roasting principle remains the same, but the exhaust air is cleaned much better," explains board member Katrin Richter.

The result is now also satisfying the residents.

Despite the filter, there was always criticism from the neighborhood

As reported, there was always thick air between Dinzler and the neighbors affected by the exhaust air.

Although the statutory emission limit values were always undercut, the Irschenbergers' complaints were taken seriously, emphasizes Richter.

New filters have been installed repeatedly to clarify the exhaust air and thus reduce odor pollution.

But the "dissonances" did not stop.

Irschenberg's mayor, Klaus Meixner, also noticed this.

At his first citizens' meeting in 2019, he was asked to follow up on the Dinzler company again.

Even if the perception is subjective - "For some it smells nice, for others it stinks" - he was looking for a conversation with the Richter family, reports Meixner.

His goal was a compromise: "The coffee roastery must be able to work well and economically, but the people in the village should also be satisfied."

The second followed in 2020.

District office confirms improvement in emissions

With success, as confirmed by the District Office.

Current measurements needed “very positive results”, reports the head of the environmental and nature conservation department, Florian Brand.

A recognized expert's office has proven that the odorous substance concentration in the exhaust gases has been reduced “quite considerably”.

"This is consistent with the personal impression we made during the last site inspections." The exposure in the immediate vicinity has decreased noticeably, and intensity and frequency can be classified as "reasonable".

The Dinzler investments would have paid off not only in terms of product quality, but also from an environmental point of view.

Investment amount in the six-digit range

Quality was also the sensitive issue for the company.

The drum roasters used on the Irschenberg would ensure the special aroma in Dinzler coffee thanks to the long-term roasting process.

“A sophisticated technology,” emphasizes Richter.

It took a long time to think about whether to really dare to do an exchange - especially since this involved an investment in the six-figure range.

“The systems were specially built for us,” explains Richter.

Due to the better exhaust air purification, the biofilters retrofitted in 2012 are now also obsolete.

"It is a stone from our hearts that with this substantial investment we have been able to make a significant contribution to eliminating dissonances and thus ensuring mutual cooperation," says Franz Richter, CEO of Dinzler Kaffeerösterei AG.

City hall chief Meixner is also pleased about this, because “the community will retain its largest trade tax payer”.

Was the Irschenberg location even on the brink because of the exhaust gas problem?

Katrin Richter waves it away.

It wouldn't have come to that.

Nevertheless, as a local company, one is interested in a good relationship with the residents, emphasizes Richter: "In this respect, our new roasting systems are also a permanent commitment to the Irschenberg production site."
