Occasionally, employees of Deutsche Post criticized the fact that the company was not paying enough attention to them during the Corona crisis.

Spokesman Erwin Nier holds against it.

District

- you work hand in hand, sometimes head to head - and ring the doorbell on hundreds of front doors every day: Post employees in the Freising district cannot simply switch to home office even in the pandemic.

You have to find other ways to protect yourself against the coronavirus - and make your employer responsible for doing so.

In an interview with the FT, Erwin Nier, spokesman for Deutsche Post, reports and defends himself against isolated criticism from the workforce.

Mr Nier, employees of the Post in Freising have reported to us that you have already had several corona cases.

Do you confirm that?

Based on the development of the incidence values in Germany since the beginning of the Corona crisis, we at Deutsche Post have also recorded cases of infection and suspected cases.

This also applies to the Freising branch.

There was occasional criticism from the workforce that the company did not pay enough attention to its employees.

We employ people from different social backgrounds in all departments.

How they behave in their private environment during the Corona crisis is beyond our control as an employer.

In the professional environment, we take every case of infection or suspicion very seriously.

There is daily reporting on this.

In addition, we are in close contact with the various health authorities, even beyond our legal obligations.

An employee of the Post approached the FT with the criticism that after corona cases, work in the company “would have just continued as if nothing had happened”.

That is not true.

So-called risk assessments have been drawn up for all company departments by occupational health and safety, which are strictly based on the respective protective measures of the countries.

In addition, each individual case of infection is discussed between the respective head of the operations department and the HR manager - with the involvement of the branch manager - in order to then derive the necessary measures.

For this purpose, a four-person pandemic team was set up in the Freising branch, which is led by the HR department head.

This committee is in constant communication with the deployment sites on site.

Are the four members doing this in addition to their actual duties?

In some cases, tasks were redistributed in the respective departments.

But a new full-time post has also been created specifically for this topic.

More than 30,000 employees tested across Germany since the pandemic began

What test strategy is Deutsche Post pursuing?

We have carried out series tests since the beginning of the Corona crisis.

In the period before Christmas alone, more than 30,000 employees nationwide were tested.

In the past few months, we have tested over 1000 employees in the Freising branch using PCR tests and rapid antigen tests.

In addition, there is an antibody study carried out in collaboration with the LMU Munich.

What is the study about?

In August 2020, we tested employees in parcel centers on a voluntary basis for Covid-19 antibodies.

The purpose of the study was to obtain information on the extent of infections that had passed undetected.

The antibody study supported the desire of science and the company to maintain transparency about the infection process in the population and to be able to use and further develop preventive measures in a targeted manner.

Voluntary free PCR tests are offered twice a week

How are the tests carried out?

Via our company medical service or the external service provider Aicher Group, with whom we have had very good experiences.

The tests are not only carried out on a case-by-case basis, but have been offered three times a week in Freising and Aschheim since mid-December.

Voluntary free PCR tests are also carried out twice a week by a medically approved service provider directly in the parcel center.

The times are regulated so that both shifts can participate.

What else is Swiss Post doing to protect employees?

In principle, all protective measures prescribed by the RKI, the health authorities and politicians are strictly observed.

This includes maintaining the minimum distance of 1.50 meters and, where this cannot be guaranteed at all times, wearing the mouth and nose cover.

Do all employees adhere to it?

The specifications are monitored by constant notifications from the employer and external security staff on the company premises, in the social rooms and in the hall of the parcel center.

In-house specialists for occupational safety carry out additional checks.

Protection concept worked out for customers

Is there also a ventilation concept?

Yes.

We have a special concept that was recently coordinated and revised with our internal occupational health and safety department.

The hall has a corresponding ventilation system with high quality filters.

And the employees of certain shifts are divided into so-called clusters, which can be recognized by means of different colored safety vests.

Each “cluster” takes a separate break, et cetera.

The parcel deliverers also have contact with many addressees.

How do you protect the customer?

All parcel deliverers are equipped with masks, including water containers, soap and disinfectants.

In addition, the delivery of parcels is carried out contactless: The DHL employee confirms the delivery or receipt of the shipment at the customer's site with his or her name.

Customers are also offered additional options for contactless receipt of their parcels.

You can have the shipment deposited at a desired location or at a packing station.

Delivery bottlenecks for the corona vaccine are causing a frustrating vaccination start in Freising.

BRK district manager Albert Söhl also has other worries.

After the death of the mayor of Hallbergmoos, no political group apparently wants to campaign.

It looks like there is only one candidate.
