Health Minister Edelstein today (Tuesday) revealed in the Constitution Committee a worrying statistic, according to which only 34% of the teaching staffs have been vaccinated so far.

The monitoring of the rate of immunization of teachers run by the Ministry of Health raises a particularly low rate in light of the high response of the rest of the population and the battles waged by the teachers' union around the issue, during which it even declared a labor dispute and threatened to suspend studies.

However, teacher representatives claim that the data collection was done incorrectly and the real number is much higher.

The teachers themselves and the various organizations were not happy to talk about the issue, and they also seem to be dissatisfied with the numbers.

Those who agreed to tell the area a variety of reasons for the low number - from fear of the long-term consequences of the vaccine, through their young age that does not put them in a risk group to the unverified rumors about the harm to female fertility.

"I'm really afraid of getting vaccinated," said S., 40, a first-grade educator from Tel Aviv.

"I am equally afraid of the disease itself, but since March I have been close to verified patients and probably not infected. I recently did a serological test and have no antibodies in my body. I want to do the vaccine in the future but I am currently postponing the end. My whole family is vaccinated, but I prefer to wait With this".

Dr. Rita Salzman Kulik, a high school English teacher and lecturer at the College of Education, does not accept the evidence for the effectiveness of vaccines. “It is always about risk management.

The risk of getting sick in Corona and dying versus the risk of introducing experimental material, "she claimed," is beyond the political interest and trend management of a government with unclean motives. "

L., a teacher from the central region, is not in a hurry to accept the doses, but clarifies that she does not oppose vaccines. In the meantime, checking in and waiting to see what happens, at the moment I still don't see the need to get vaccinated.

I do not know if I have been infected with corona in the past, maybe yes and I did not know about it, "she said." I know of some pregnant teachers who are very hesitant about the vaccine. "

The effect of Pike News

At a meeting of the Constitution Committee this morning, Minister Edelstein detailed the reasons for the low figure.

"The vaccination of educational staff has been going on for a long time and we are in a very low percentage. It could be Pike News that is constantly being spread about young women not being vaccinated, even though the Israeli Gynecologists' Association has issued a statement that this is not true," he said.

Edelstein's special reference to the immunization of women did not come out of nowhere.

The average age of teachers in Israel is 40-43, and most of them are women - more than 99% of teaching staff are employed in pre-primary education, about 86% in primary education, close to 80% in middle school and more than 70% in upper division.

A teacher from Rehovot, a third-grade educator, is one of the women who fears following the false information.

She said, "I will not jeopardize my chances of having children because someone here in the country is doing experiments on humans, and I will say to the Minister of Education: I would be happy if she cared about Israeli teachers and not just students and their parents."

The false information affects.

As part of the vaccination campaign, the teaching staff agreed that the Ministry of Education would transfer the names of the active teachers to the HMOs and the Ministry of Health, so that they could be invited for vaccinations.

According to Avi Kaminsky, chairman of the Association of Directors of Local

Government Education Departments,

this is not a figure that represents the overall picture.

"The Minister of Health is certainly claiming that teachers are employees of the Ministry of Education, whose names have been transferred to the Ministry of Health.

"But there are also teaching staff whose names the ministry does not pass on and we have been vaccinated through local authorities, for example, owned upper secondary education teachers (education networks - SG), assistants, daycare staff, teaching assistants and education envelope workers," he noted.

"Therefore, the data transmitted from the Ministry of Education is not the overall picture. I am not saying that 75% of all teaching staff have been vaccinated, but I am certainly saying that it is not 34%."

He said, "The overall figure has already passed the 50-60%, certainly if we add the teaching staff who have passed the age of 60. I think we will be close to the result of 70% in a few days because all education department heads increase the information to convince teachers to get vaccinated ".
