riots began
on Sunday afternoon in the cities of
Amsterdam
and
Eindhoven
.
Protesters attacked police officers with fireworks and stones after they broke up previously
banned demonstrations
with water cannons and tear gas.
Shortly before the
curfew began
at 9 p.m., the unrest spread to other cities across the country.
The
police did not have
the situation under control
until around midnight
.
The
riots
were particularly violent
in
Eindhoven
, in the east of the Netherlands.
The
station
was demolished and shops plundered.
"Hooligans came from all corners of the country, they had met on social media," said
John Jorritsma
, Mayor of Eindhoven.
“If you set the country on fire in this way,
it is like a civil war,
” said the politician.
Other major unrest were also reported from Tilburg, Stein, Roermond, The Hague and Apeldoorn, among others.
The police arrested an unknown number of people.
