Dutch police arrested at least 150 people across the country last night (Tuesday) on Tuesday night in a row of riots.

The riots began over the weekend in protest of a night curfew imposed by the government, but the motive behind the acts of vandalism and other violent incidents that took place in the big cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and in smaller cities like Harlem, Glynn and Dan Bush is unclear.

Most of the rioters are teenagers.

Police used water cannons against looters in Rotterdam and tear gas against masses in Harlem.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who is facing elections in March after the government resigned earlier this month, condemned the riots in which protesters opposed the closure attacked police and set fires, including at a corona testing facility.

The curfew, the first imposed in the country since World War II, went into effect after the National Institutes of Health warned of a new wave of infections due to the British mutation, although the rate of new diagnoses in the Netherlands has been declining in recent weeks.

4,129 new cases were diagnosed in the past day, the lowest number since December 1st.

Police said they handed out more than 5,700 fines to curfew violators, which lasted from 9 p.m. to 4:40 p.m.

"It has nothing to do with demonstrations, it's criminal violence," Rota said outside his office in The Hague.

Non-essential schools and businesses have been closed since the middle of last month, following the closure of bars and restaurants two months earlier.

13,579 people have died from corona in the Netherlands since the outbreak, and 952,950 have been diagnosed positive for the virus.

The NPB warned against further demonstrations due to the prolongation of the closure and management of the vaccination program, which is one of the slowest in Europe.

"We have not seen such much violence in the last 40 years," said union board member Con Simers.
