Farmers Insurance Open: without Tiger Woods but with Rahm and McIlroy

2021-01-26T15:22:42.237Z

PRESENTATION - Operated from the back, the Tiger, eight times winner here at Torrey Pines (PGA Tour and US Open) is not at the start. Respectively world numbers 2 and 7, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are among the big favorites for the final victory.

Absent on the PGA Tour since his 38th place at the Masters on November 15, Tiger Woods, seen just before Christmas alongside his 11-year-old son Charlie at the PNC Championship, was due to resume competition this week in Torrey Pines (California), at the Farmers Insurance Open.

A place he really appreciates since the former world No. 1 has won there eight times (seven times on the PGA Tour, once at the US Open 2008).

But the Tiger, who celebrated his 45th birthday on December 30, had to resolve at the very beginning of 2021 to undergo a new microdiscectomy consisting of removing a fragment of a disc that was pinching a nerve in his lower back.

Hence his package for one of his favorite tournaments with the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

His return is not yet scheduled.

He will also be absent in Los Angeles next month at the Genesis Invitational, an event for which he is the ambassador through his foundation.

"I can't wait to start training again," the man with fifteen Grand Slam titles said simply via his

account

.

It is recalled that Woods has had surgery on his back and knees several times in recent years, but that did not prevent him from returning to the highest level, notably winning the Augusta Masters in 2019, his first Major in eleven years old, before continuing in October of the same year with an 82nd victory in Japan (ZOZO Championship), here equaling the legendary record of Sam Snead on the PGA Tour.

No Tiger Woods therefore but the field of this 2021 edition under high protection due to the pandemic linked to the coronavirus which remains very virulent in the United States (more than 420,000 deaths recorded) remains very attractive.

Winner of his fifth personal title last year, Australian Marc Leishman will try to keep the trophy.

Facing him, his compatriot Jason Day, two-time winner here in San Diego, will be one of his fiercest opponents.

Just like the Spaniard Jon Rahm, world No. 2 back to the game after withdrawing at the beginning of last week from the American Express.

The Basque loves the site.

He won in 2017 and finished 2nd last year.

Rory McIlroy will be the other big attraction between Thursday and Sunday (if he passes the cut of course).

The Northern Irishman, 3rd in 2020, returns from the European Tour and the United Arab Emirates where he could not do better than… third place in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, won by the Englishman Tyrrell Hatton.

Note that McIlroy is launching his year on the PGA Tour at Torrey Pines.

As such, the Briton will have to tame the two routes on the week's program (for the first two days).

On the one hand, the North Course, a par 72 of 6,636 meters.

On the other hand, the South Course, the main course where the last two laps of the weekend will be contested.

Tiger Woods also holds the record there with an enormous 62 (-10) achieved during the third round in 1999. Torrey Pines and his South Course which will also host the next US Open from June 17 to 20.
