Gold Merovingian coins, weapons and funerary material were stolen on the night of January 20-21. The administration deplores the loss of “an inestimable historical heritage”.

Archaeological objects in gold, coins, weapons and funerary material, were stolen during the night from Wednesday to Thursday at the Arkéos museum in Douai (North), said Tuesday the Agglomeration Community of Douaisis, deploring the theft of "

a priceless historical heritage ”.

According to the CCTV images, two people, who seemed to know the place well, broke into the museum from the rear and "

after breaking several windows, took possession of gold objects

", specifies the Community in a press release.

The amount of the damage was estimated at 130,000 euros but, insists the regional direction of Cultural Affairs (Drac) of Hauts-de-France, these objects have above all an "

inestimable heritage and scientific value

".

"

These are coins, ancient weapons and Merovingian funerary material

", one explains to the Drac.

These objects, some dating from the end of the Iron Age, in the 1st century, come in particular from an archaeological excavation carried out in 2011-2012 in Sin-le-Noble, a town close to Douai.

The archaeological park-museum Arkéos de Douai includes a museum depicting the life of this territory since prehistoric times and a park that plunges the visitor into a reconstruction of the year 1000.
