Italy is once again plunged into the unknown.
The Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, put in difficulty on January 13 by the withdrawal of the ministers Italia Viva, hoped to save his government by rallying some responsible elected officials in the Senate.
But after two weeks of bluffing, feverish negotiations and dashed hopes, he had to face the facts: he does not have the majority to govern.
He would have been overturned in the first vote in the Senate on Thursday, on a simple technical report from the Keeper of the Seals.
So he preferred to take the lead, so as not to suffer the humiliation that would have mortgaged his plans.
But it is well constrained and forced that Giuseppe Conte submitted his resignation on Tuesday noon to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
The 66th government of the Italian Republic, the result of a coalition between the Democratic Party (PD), the 5-Star Movement (M5S), Italia Viva (until January 13) and Liberi e Uguali (LEU), will have lasted 509 days.
